{"id":14699,"date":"2024-12-16T11:57:48","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T10:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/?p=14699"},"modified":"2026-03-12T17:11:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T16:11:15","slug":"gargoyles-of-the-university-of-alcala-de-henares","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/gargoyles-of-the-university-of-alcala-de-henares\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gargoyles of the University of Alcal\u00e1 de Henares: A Sculptural Legacy of Madrid, Spain&#8217;s Heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this entry we travel to the <strong>Madrid region (Spain)<\/strong> to explore the marvellous and imaginative <strong>gargoyles<\/strong> of one of the most important examples of the Spanish Renaissance: the extraordinary <strong>fa\u00e7ade of the University of Alcal\u00e1 de Henares<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1537, the great Rodrigo Gil de Honta\u00f1\u00f3n was put in charge of this magnificent work, the construction of which would last until 1553. Although we know that gargoyles were mainly represented in the Gothic period, we also have examples from the Renaissance. In Spain, Renaissance architecture was slow to renounce the use of gargoyles. As Burbank Bridaham says, even the Renaissance, eager to rid itself of any taint produced by the \u201cvulgar\u201d Gothic, could not resist adopting gargoyles into its style.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the Gothic manner, we have these exceptional gargoyles, which nevertheless have a Renaissance touch in some details and ornamentation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What do these gargoyles represent that makes them so fascinating and unique?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All the figures depicted are placed under a guttering block, with a U-shaped mouth, which serves as a drain. We have already seen this element in some gargoyles, such as in <a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/the-exceptional-gargoyles-of-the-west-facade-of-salamanca-cathedral\/\"><strong>Salamanca Cathedral (Spain)<\/strong><\/a>. Although the water does not flow directly out of the mouth of the gargoyle, it is true that this type of structure helps the figure represented to deteriorate much less due to various factors (climatic, biological, chemical, etc.).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All gargoyles have, as ornamentation, a piece with appendages that emerge from a vertex, giving it a fan shape; the outermost tip ends in a spiral, a very frequent Renaissance finial. This element, in addition to serving as decoration, gives them the appearance of <a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/the-exuberant-beauty-of-gargoyle-wings\/\"><strong>wings<\/strong><\/a>, enhancing their fantastical and otherworldly look.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some of them have plant elements \u2013 e.g. bodies and hands ending in leaves \u2013 that are also typical of the Renaissance and Plateresque periods, such as can be seen in Salamanca Cathedral \u2013it is worth noting that Rodrigo Gil de Honta\u00f1\u00f3n also worked on this cathedral\u2013, and which are likewise reminiscent of Renaissance grotesque.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Typologies<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The subject matter is highly varied. There are a total of 14 gargoyles, all of them diverse and highly imaginative in their typology. Following the order of the photographs below, we have the figure of a man with large acanthus-like leaves from the waist down. Next, we see a<a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/unusual-animals-in-gargoyle-imagery-i\/\"><strong> wild boar<\/strong><\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/the-eagle-and-its-portrayal-in-gargoyles\/\"><strong>eagle <\/strong><\/a>(or what appears to be such, as it is damaged), a child, a <a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/the-lion-and-its-portrayal-in-gargoyles\/\"><strong>lion<\/strong><\/a>, a ram, a <a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/unusual-animals-in-gargoyle-imagery-i\/\"><strong>bat<\/strong><\/a>, a bearded man with parchment, and also a beautiful figure of a woman holding a mirror (vanity) with a naked torso and a cloth covering her from the waist down. There are also several monsters and <a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/the-devil-and-his-portrayal-in-gargoyles-i\/\"><strong>demons<\/strong><\/a>, some of them terrifying, expressive, and magnificent. One of them is an <a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/the-anthropomorph-in-gargoyles-symbolism-and-images\/\"><strong>anthropomorphic <\/strong><\/a>figure with pointed ears, a human torso and leaves as hands. Two of them, one with the head of a lion and the other with the head of a bird, have large fangs and protruding eyebrows. Another has a goatee, a plume and legs ending in leaves. Finally, there is an impressive demon with a <a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/the-dragon-and-its-symbolism\/\"><strong>dragon-like<\/strong><\/a> body and feet that end in coiled <a href=\"https:\/\/doloresherrero.com\/en\/the-devil-and-his-portrayal-in-gargoyles-iii\/\"><strong>snake <\/strong><\/a>tails.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Undoubtedly, this is one of the most excellent and magnificent sets of Renaissance gargoyles in the Madrid region and in Spain. They are all unique gargoyles of great sculptural beauty. This beautiful fa\u00e7ade, declared a World Heritage Site, together with the rest of the historic quarter of Alcal\u00e1 de Henares, is an example of artistic excellence.
