Gargoyles in Ávila

The gargoyles in Ávila are part of the sculptural tradition that has accompanied architecture as both a functional solution for water drainage and a vehicle for symbolic expression. These figures, displaying a wide formal variety, reflect the continuity of iconographic models and their adaptation to different artistic contexts.

The photographic archive documents various gargoyles across the province, among which those of Ávila Cathedral stand out, one of the principal monumental ensembles of the region, together with other occasional examples found in different buildings across the province.

These sculptural manifestations make it possible to approach the iconographic richness of gargoyles in the province of Ávila, as well as their integration within the architectural programmes in which they are embedded.

The following gallery presents a selection of gargoyles in Ávila, documented photographically in various buildings across the province, including Ávila Cathedral and other examples found within the territory.

These images are part of the documentary archive dedicated to the study of gargoyles created by Dolores Herrero Ferrio, focused on the research, documentation, and dissemination of these sculptural figures in Spain and other countries.
